Site: Camp Riverlea

Location: North of Durham (Baham, NC)

Contact: Ysolt (of Buxton, knows the owner). Camp's phone is 477-8739.

Facilities: Archery range, pool, lake, screened in hall, no kitchen.

Cost: Unsure

Last Updated: 1 June 1998

Ysolt's Yxplanation: I ran into the owner in the grocery store and asked if she would ever consider our using it. She was very hesitant. In the summer, the children leave personal items in the bathhouse area even over weekends. And the site is completely closed after summer. Our use would be burdensome. But I wonder if a request in writing explaining a little more might get a better response. Especially if it were scheduled just before they open or right at the end. [10/24/97]

Cost: Unknown

Information Gathered By: Bonne (formerly Anne of Buxton)

Last Updated: 1 June 1998

Bonne's Broodings: I've been meaning to call the Durham Armory in downtown Durham for ages and find out what their deal is. No good for camping obviously , but good for one-day, non-fighting events like a bardic or dance or big feast. (Sveva tells me that in the cold and snowy kingdoms, fighting inside during winter is not unheard of so that does open it up to more types of events. Rapier is sometimes indoors, is it not?) Those who must stay overnight might be able to get group/weekend rates at the Durham Marriot across the street. I haven't called because I don't know what sorts of questions to ask. I do have the number though: 560-4514 It has these tower like things on the corner, so if you squint your eyes and the light is right, it even looks kinda, vaguely, castle-ish! ;-)

Site: Durham County Wildlife Club

Location: Off of 54 / Alston Ave in RTP

Contact: Vince Yakamavich 847-8512 and Joel Pendegraft 933-8160

Facilities: No buildings, several fields, one of them quite large, a lake with a picnic area, an archery range, and a rifle range. No physical structure.

Cost: Unknown

Last Updated: 24 Ocrtpber 1997

Nikulai's Notations: The lack of feast hall kind of removes the site for possibility for cold weather events, but there is plenty of room for the Baronial or other large pavilions to be used as a feat hall. Not a great site, but worth considering, depending on the event and price. [10/24/97]

Site: Durant Nature Park

Location: Raleigh, NC??

Contact: Susan Brody at 831-6856 or the caretaker, Charlie Wheeler, at 870-2871. (Charlie's father became the caretaker when Charlie was 13, and so Charlie has lived there most of his life and knows the park inside and out.)

Facilities: According to the people who run it, it is over 235 acres, has a play field area (suitable for a list field), a feast hall that seats 150 to 200 people, two different camping areas (one by a lake and the other more rustic - i.e. a long walk to the rest rooms), two lakes, five miles of trails, an overnight lodge that sleeps 35 people, several different picnic areas with shelters, and 2 campfire areas.

Cost: The camping areas are $240 each, Campbell Lodge (the feast hall) is $205, and the sleeping lodge is $110.

Nikulai's Notations: I am lead to understand that the SCA used this location several years ago for an event or two. I have not been to visit, but have heard from several people that it is quite nice. Sounds like a great place for a Kingdom or Baronial level event which you know is going to have a very large turnout. [10/14/97]

Corwyn's Commentary: Durant was used for FAR more than a few events, until the price and hassle of the site became prohibitive. (Not that i remember what "Prohibitive" was, we WERE all much poorer then). [10/24/97]

Information Gathered By: Nikulai with referal by Lady Anastasia Rublev of Drachentor

Last Updated: 17 November 1997

Nikulai's Notations: I had been informed that Drachentor had used one of these camps for an event in the past. I called Lady Anastasia, and she sent me the application to use the sites. I called the council, and got a few more specifics as to location, but I did not ask much beyond that. The folks at the council were extremely friendly and helpful. [11/17/97]

Site: Rolling View State Park

Location: Falls Lake

Contact: Falls Lake State Recreation Area 13304 Creedmoor Road Wake Forest, NC 919-676-1027

Facilities: Community building with fireplace, small kitchen, bathroom with no showers. Camping about 1/2 mile away.

Cost: Park entrance fee $3 per person per day and the hall is $100 per day

Last Updated: 1 June 1998

Effen's Epitulations: I've used this site twice for work things. (I should have said something earlier, duh) Was it used for Boat Wars some time back? I missed that one. Anyway the info is: Park entrance fee is $3/day. $100/day for the hall (community building). Max occupancy is 70 with tables and chairs, or 150 with loose chairs. Has a fireplace and a small kitchen. Bathrooms w no showers. I didn't see it, but I believe camping is about a 1/2 mile walk away. I don't know what facilites are there. There is LOTS of parking, tourney space looks limited unless you want to fight on the beach (sand in the armour really chafes). Maybe someone who has used the site for SCA things knows more.

Site: Snipes Farm

Location: Carrboro, NC (off of Rte 54)

Contact: Mr. Snipes - In Carrboro / Chapel Hill phone book under 'Snipes Farm'

Facilities: Several acres of land, a small lake, two good sized fields, one on either side of the feast hall. The feast hall is a rather large, converted barn. It has a cement poured floor, a few small sections set off, and a large two tiered open area. The posts supporting the roof are still the original rough hewn posts from its barn days. Granted, it has two disco balls in it, but it has a nice feel to the place.

Cost: Mr. Snipes said he usually lets it for wedding receptions at a rate of $700 per day, but he could let the SCA have it for $500 a day.

Katherine's Komentary: Reservations for each year do not begin until January of that year (so

no advance booking for the coming spring...)

Site: Windmasters' Hill Stables

Location: Lillington on NC 210

Contact: David Crider (Through Tankred)

Facilities: 23 acres separated into three paddocks, a little pond, and a big arena with stadium lighting /w a nice reviewing stand and castle on one end. It also has a feast hall which he is in the process of putting a roof on. It is VERY primitive /w only one trailer on site that has facilities (i.e. 1 bathroom), but has alot of very expensive office equipment, so I am not too sure about that either. This is still in the works.

Cost: He is not to sure what he would charge for using his land.
