I'm just curious, having never attended a war or any event other then a few meetings years ago before I moved to my current home.
So I've never seen if archery was just target shooting or just not done at all.
hmmmm appeaars the computer thinks this is spam....
Archery in the SCA takes two forms, Target and Combat.
Target Archery uses just about any bow you like (no modern compound bows please) and uses target arrows (you can buy them at any sporting goods store). We shoot at a variety of types of targets, and do speed shoots as well as shoots with a limited number of arrows. Anyone can do Target Archery just by walking out to the range when there's one set up (minors may need their parents with them).
Combat Archery allows archers to shoot at other people. As such, there is a limit on the equipment. Bows and Crossbows have a maximum poundage, so they can only throw someting so fast. Also, the ammo is made by hand from a standard set of components. The "tips" of the arrows (or bolts) are "blunts" with foam over them. Combat archers need to have legal armor for the activity (armored or rapier combat) and have to pass an authorization.
