So, it's just a couple months until we migrate north to Cooper's Lake. Who's going to Pennsic 38?

 School doesn't start till

School doesn't start till the 20th of August, so assuming I have two nickels to rub together, I'll be there.

What exactly is Pennsic?
What exactly is Pennsic? Because I might be able to go to it, and from what I've read so far, it'd be one hell of a first event...

Pennsicwar.org does a pretty

Pennsicwar.org does a pretty good job of summing it up in clinical terms:

"Pennsic is an annual event, in the guise of a "War", between the Kingdoms of the East and the Middle of the Society for Creative Anachronism Pennsic is also the largest Society event, with attendance in recent years exceeding 10,000. The scheduled activities include large melee battles, tournaments, archery, stage performances, dancing, and hundreds of classes on medieval topics. The marketplace has over 200 merchants selling a variety of wares."

It is the largest event in the Society, breaking 12,000 in recent years from as far away as Australia. There is amoung the best shopping, fighting, classes, etc. etc. at Pennsic. The flip side is also true. Not all of the people in attendance are SCA members. Many are affiliated with other groups, each with their own interest or lack of interest in the various areas on which the SCA focuses.

It can be an amazing first event... and as long as you go in realizing that 99.9% of the other events you attend will be nothing like Pennsic, you will be fine. There are several other inter-Kingdom wars, but Pennsic is the largest and also the closest to us.

If you want more details, feel free continue to ask questions here. You are also welcome to call or text me (number is in my profile) or email me off line.

My first question is 'When is it?' and the second question is 'Where is it?' Also, is there a fee to attend and if so, what is it?

Its a two week event, though

Its a two week event, though most people only come for the second week. The last week in July is called 'land grab' and is essentially set up for all the camps, etc. Activities really dont get started until about Wednesday of that week, and they dont really pick up until Sunday. The second week is War Week and thats when all of the main battles and activities are. Will you be 18 by then? If not, you must have a parent or legal guardian on site (most events you can have a responsible adult, but Pennsic requires parents or legal guardians).

It is held in western PA, at Coopers Lake Campground, in Slippery Rock, PA.

Details about fees are here but of you are just coming for war week and you are pre-registered and not a paid member of the SCA it is $110 for admission to Pennsic. That does not include food, etc. The barony usually charges a camp fee to help with paying for firewood, maintaining the showers, renting the common tent, etc. I cant remember, but I think its about $20 per person.
