Article Category page - article numbers confusing

I like the new boxes around the objects on the main articles page. 
However, there was a change to what articles show up when you pick a category.
It used to be that all articles directly attached to that category and all articles attached to subcategories underneath it showed up on the right.  A bit confusing, but at least the number of articles shown on the left by the category name matched the number of articles that showed up on the right.
Now we only see articles on the right that are directly attached to that category.  I think that's an improvement.  But the number of articles on the left no longer matches the number of articles that show up.  The number on the left should match the number of articles that show up on the right.
