Where to buy armor for SCA Armored Combat

Printer-friendly version

Here's a collection of some of the places I've bought armor, or would consider buying armor, for use in SCA Armored Combat.

Master Eldrid: Eldrid (Tom Justus) is not only a member of the Order of the Laurel for armoring, but is probably one of the top 5 armor smiths in the US, and he lives in Burlington NC. He can make armor for you from just about any time period, and will deliver a work of art as well as a protective piece of armor.

There’s also the Armour Archive’s Classified section. Many times you can pick up specialty items or well used gear there.

Be careful buying armor off Ebay, or other web sites. Many people out there know about the SCA, and will list their stuff as “SCA Legal” even if it isn’t. One new fighter I’ve chatted with handed me 4 helms. He kept buying helms off Ebay for $20 or less until he found one that was legal and fit. The 4 he gave me were the ones that didn’t make the grade.

re: buying off Ebay

One of our fighters, who will remain nameless to protect the guilty, bought a new "sca legal" helm off Ebay.  It looked a lot like his old helm so no one noticed, and he didn't say anything about it.
I was teaching how to fight with a two-handed axe that day.
My first shot to his helm dented the helm a half-inch.  My immediate follow-on shot split the helm open over the forehead.
The axe, which I still have, is now named "Helm Cleaver".
Don't EVER take a piece of new armour onto the field without having a marshal inspect it!
