Printer-friendly version

When I first started playing many many years ago the Known World Handbook was the ultimate resource for newcomers. There was easy to understand information on every topic under the sun in that thing. Unfortunately over the years it seems to have fallen by the wayside. I just spotted a post on SCA Today that indicates the Society is in the process of revamping the KWH with an eye towards having a new version ready by 2010. For those of you who are too new to remember the Known World Handbook this is a huge deal and something to be very excited about!

Dont get too excited.... this

Dont get too excited.... this is at least the third call for articles, etc. for a revision of the KWH that I can recall. They call for articles, announce a new one is coming, and then go silent for a fe years until they clal for articles...

Ok that sucks. A new edition of the KWH would kick ass.

I think the Known World
I think the Known World Handbook is a concept that’s time has come and gone. I can find good information on any SCA related subject with google. Before the internet it was a useful tool for beginners, now there is no way they could possibly print something that would have much value compared to what is available for free on the internet.

The book printing business is moving to the concept of electronic format and print on demand. The boat plans I bought last summer came as a PDF (at a slight discount). I only printed the few pages with numbers that I needed in the shop, the rest I just read. I saved a portion of a tree…

With shrinking SCA membership numbers, I really doubt they will ever print it.
