so am I the only noob?
I suppose this will be the first new post for this forum.
I've not yet been to any formal meetings in the barony. Have been meeting people outside of official events and figure it's time to start looking into things a little more deeply.
My modern name is Magnus. I live in north Raleigh. Don't yet have a period persona. I'm interested mainly in learning more about brewing and blacksmithing, maybe also trying leather working.
I'm into photography and look forward to applying my modern interests to capturing period moments. I caught this one earlier today, as a matter of fact:

I suppose because of my name, and my preference for often wearing kilts in public, people have asked me a LOT over the years if I'm in the SCA.
Hi!
My squire Daffyd likes to wear a kilt too. To each their own!
I'm glad you decided to check us out - and that's a *really* great photo, actually.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask - we're all friendly, promise!
Welcome!
We're still working all of the kinks out of the website. In the mean time if you want to post raw html you need to use plain text mode. The rich text editor eats HTML.
I live in North Raleigh, too! We are glad to have you. I play with the Buckston group in Durham, primarily, but we are just one big happy family in the Barony. You may want to visit each of the Cantons to see which one seems to suit you best. I am the Chatelaine for the Canton of Buckston on Eno and the Chronicler for the Barony. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. Again, welcome!

I've been going to the Kappellenberg fencing practices, on and off, for about four months, and I just taught my first class for the Canton, but I don't have an SCA membership and I've never been to an event. For me, it's mostly about the stabbing and the company - Windmasters has a lot of awesome people in it - although I'm also interested in learning more about blacksmithing, brewing, and leatherwork. Stonework, too, if anyone does it.
I don't really have a persona, and I don't really see the need to have one. I do have a Roman nomen, Quinta Caelia Laeta, by which I am known among the Nova Roma crowd, so I'll answer to Caelia as well as Dreya.

If you're looking to get into leatherwork I occasionally teach on the subject. I prefer teaching 1-on-1 or in small groups. I'd be willing to start up a series of introductory classes if there's interest.
Hi Magnus! Good to see you here, will be even better when you make it to a meeting or event ;)
You should like that picture you got of the forge too, that was a beautiful shot.
Magnus,
If you like wearing kilts, you may be interested in this article about them.

Actually, I think I am the newbie now, as I have pretty much just found out about SCA earlier this morning, and have since spent my time researching about it and have decided I'll make and/or find the time to join. However, I already live about 45 minutes away from the local canton, which is Attilium, so the travel alone takes a little of my time anyway. And I have somehow gone off on quite a few tangents, as I have a wont to do sometimes, and I still do not know why as it only happens when I write. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know that you're not the only newbie around here!
Welcome Hadurich! Feel free to ask any questions. We have an event (Rapier Academy) this coming weekend at Optimist Farm in Apex. Also, locally, in June we have Torunament of the Golden Rose which will also be at Optimist Farm.
What areas of the SCA are you interested in?
I cannot attend the Event this weekend, as it's too short of notice and I work most Saturdays from 1pm - 8pm on a golfing range, so until summer comes around, I will probably be busy most saturdays. But I'll be getting another shift soon, so I'll try and ask for saturday's off. But the Tournament in June sounds possible. I'd just need some more details, as I graduate the 13th of June and then I have Freshman Orientation the 18th and 19th. But hopefully I can fit the tourney in somewhere, because it would be an awesome experience.
As for the areas, I'm interested heavily in the combat, as I've taken a few fencing classes, and have done martial arts for a very long time, but I'm also highly interested in blacksmithing, having completed the merit badge for it in Boy Scouts. Plus, it's just fun. I also am kind of interested in copper-smithing, falconry, archery, equestrainship (which I'm pretty sure is a word... Not 100% though), and overall just living as my ancestors would have. I've loved these periods of history for as long as I can remember, so when I saw the newspaper article about it, I jumped on it and here I am. Hopefully, I can integrate the persona I wish to create, fairly well into the Barony while I'm here.
Thats too bad about the event this weekend, especially as you are interested in rapier.
It sounds as though the Tournament of the Golden Rose and your graduation are on the same day, so I suspect that wont work out for you either.
There are fighter practices in Fuquay-Varina on Wednesdays and in Fayetville on Sundays.
Are you 18 yet? If not, there are some waivers etc. you will need to get your parents to sign before you can start fighting.
Are you solely interested in rapier fighting, or does the armored combat interest you as well?
Sovarr is very active in the blacksmithing community. He frequently brings his portable forge to events and has been known to do open forge nites.
Alain is active in the equestrian community and has coordinated both practices and event activities.
They also do an archery practice in Fuquay on Mondays.
The SCA is capable filling up as much of your time as you let it, especially in this area as we have five sub-groups operating within the barony, each having its own classes, meetings, practices, events, etc.
Most people are very eager to help people learn, the trick is to go over to them and ask questions. Of course, once you get one of us started... ;)
The group out in Asheville is The Barony of Hawkwood and there are some very good people there as well.
Thanks for all of the information! And I'm quite a bit more interested in heavy/armored combat as opposed to rapier combat, as I've always had a little bit of an affinity with the axe... XD As for waiver's, I'll be 18 before I can do anything anyway, so I won't need to worry about those and I find myself disappointed that the day of my graduation and the day of the Tournament fall on the same day. As for the practices, I could only make wednesday's possibly, but that would be if they were close, so I don't see myself as being able to attend either practices until possibly mid to late June. But whenever I can make it out to one of them I will, and whenever I can attend a baronial event, I will make sure to seek out Sovarr and bring all of my miscellaneous scraps of copper so that maybe I can heat them up and combine them and find something to do with it from there. Also, would it be required for me to piece together a costume before attending anything? Because I'm going for a 13th century Germanic warrior, and that could be slightly challenging, but I bet I can find some models from the History Channel. Just finding period-style materials would be the challenging part. And I don't leave for Asheville until August, so I'll be around this Barony until then and and I'll be around next summer as well, so what kind of problems could that pose?
Not a problem... glad to help.
We have loaner garb, so dont sweat garb for your first event - unless you want to ;) - just let us know you are coming and need some loaner garb and your approximate size and we can arrange to have something for you to wear. You can find a ton of costuming links here.
It is unfortunate that you wont be able to make the Toruney in June. The next event in the barony is not until September, though there are plenty of other events around the kingdom. You can see whats coming up on the kingdom calendar. You should also keep an eye on the baronial calendar on this web site for fighter practices, meetings, classes, etc.
There is some information on heavy armored fighting, and where to buy armor on the baronial web page. There is also video of a class on armor - part 1 - part 2 - part 3. Also, there is a good video of His Excellency, The Baron fighting here.
I was poking and proding around the SCA website and filtered my way through to this site and maybe I missed it but, do you have to be a part of the canton region to participate? Also, do you have to wear garb to meetings and practices? Thank you for your time.
~Deitrich
As far as I know, you don't have to be part of the canton to participate. Nor do you have to attend meetings or practices in garb, although if you're fighting you do have to wear the requisite safety equipment.
I've been bothering these people for months without having an official SCA membership, and they haven't chased me off yet!
Well in that case, I will just check the calendar and pop by a meeting or something when I am off of work. Look forward to meeting more like minded individuals!

OK that HTML didn't work at all (the forum software lies *grin*)
